SANGEETA DEWAN’s work speaks volumes even if she is most comfortable staying behind the scenes. As creative head of Zoya, the couture jewellery retail brand of Tanishq, Sangeeta has enthralled her audience with riveting jewellery collections laced with history and mythology. Usually, her voluminous work does the talking, but this time around, Sangeeta dropped her guard and chose to speak with SHANOO BIJLANI about how powerful stories can be told through bejewelled heirlooms. An impassioned student of history, mythology and cultural studies, Sangeeta has, over the years, learned the art of transforming these complex subjects into easy-on-the-eye, soulful objets d’art that, in one sweep, cut across age groups and class lines in terms of appeal. Inexhaustibly inventive, Sangeeta manages to bring out four new collections at Zoya every year, each different from the other, and yet possessing an underlining daring opulence. A winner of many prestigious awards, this NIFT graduate, also earned a scholarship to study at the Creative Academy promoted by the Richemont group in Milan. Later, she was the only student chosen to intern at Van Cleef & Arpels and got to design a necklace for the King of Morocco, who wanted to gift the piece to his wife as a present on the birth of their first child. That assignment was a great learning experience, she recalls. Today, in her spare time, she likes to share her experiences and teach young design students. It is her way of giving back to society.
Here are some of the awe-inspiring designs by Sangeeta Dewan. To read the interview check out our March-April 2014 issue.
